Work in progress

Ok, well, the updates have been a bit thin on the ground (better things to do than sit around in the summer at a computer) - and to be honest, the site’s looking a bit ropey. So, time for a rethink and a redesign.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be completely rebuilding the site based around Wordpress 2.0. At the moment, the site uses Wordpress 1.5 - but only as a backend. All the frontend code is handbuilt from the ground up. It was built for a specific purpose - for my quick jaunt around the globe - and as such was a bit of a rushed job - it served it’s purpose well, but has some problems. Anyway, it’s been creaking and I’ve shied away from doing anything (including posting blog entries) as I hated looking at some of the dodgy underlying code.

While it all works, it becomes more difficult to manage after a while, and completely impossible to upgrade. I’ve lost interest in hand-coding everything, as that’s all I do at work all day long - so I’ll let the existing systems handle the nasty stuff, and I’ll concentrate on making the site itself a little more interesting (what’s the point of beautiful code if you’re the only one who knows it exists?).

So, time for a complete rework.

As everything will be based around Wordpress 2.0, it’ll be more of a traditional blog - but with a bit of ajax trickery, some google maps, and a tie into my flickr account (rather than using my dodgy old hand-coded gallery scripts). A spruce up and a bit of a dust, basically.

Anyway, keep an eye out, as it’ll happen soon.
